There was a good turnout for the LX Section Caesar's Challenge this year following some concerted promotion by the organisers headed by Caesar 2010, Alan Rider. The 70 entrants competed in three separate competitions, Individual, Team and a Yellow Ball. The event was open to all GX members.

Congratulations go to Laurie Batten for being the first winner of the Caesar's Challenge trophy from the high handicap section with a score of 39pts.

*

The Yellow Ball competition proved testing as 12 of the 24 teams failed complete the 18 holes with their Yellow ball, a similar proportion to last year. There were also 4 "nil points" returns for the teams that managed to lose their Yellow ball on their first playing hole!

*

Gary Middleton snatched the Nearest the Wavy Line prize early on by landing his ball on the line with the first drive of the day.

*

After a Ploughman's Lunch, Caesar presided over the prize giving. The Captain gave a vote thanks with a Latin theme, Alan Rider, Tony Pike and John Ramsbottom in particular were praised for their major contribution to the success of the day. "And so say all of us !"

Club Championship 2010

Cooler but fine weather was a real bonus for the 42 players who entered for the Club Championship on Sunday July 11th. All were competing for two trophies over 36 holes, the Coronation Cup (Scratch) and the Chalfont Park Cup(Handicap).

Congratulations go to our Club Champion for 2010, Dan Messias with a gross score of 145 (71+ 74).

Well done also to Harry Fischer, a Junior member, who won the Chalfont Park Cup with 137net (73+64). Harry's final tally had a welcome boost from a " Hole in One" at the 5th hole.

A now familiar group of helpers turned out as usual to ensure that the event ran smoothly. This included a team of 11 Juniors and a member who acted as ball spotters throughout the day. Member, Jan Hubrechet, an EGU qualified referee was the rules official for the event. Thanks go to all.

The continuing fine weather provided Colin Steele with a perfect day for his Captain's Day celebrations. The golf competition in aid of his charity Pepper /(Care for children support for families) was fully subscribed. The Team Better Ball Greensomes format also proved to be very popular with competitors.

The practice putting green was tastefully dressed with various obstacles to provide a good test for the putter. Jack Haines returned the best score of 21 for the 9 hole course. Proceeds for this and other side shows also went to the charity.

Matthew Barr with assistance from Justin ran his annual Las Vagas "Double Your Voucher Value" deal for balls finishing on the 13th green. The Profit/Loss account for this venture has not been disclosed? Hot snacks and drinks were provided at the 13th with able assistance from Gordon, Colin and Alison's son.

*

At prize giving for recent competitions and the events on the day, the Captain expressed his thanks to all for their support on his Captain's Day. The evening was rounded off in style with a well attended supper, a jazz quartet providing background music in a very lively dining room.

St. George's Supper

The Captain on carving duties with St George, the Dragon and M.C. James Torr in close attendance

Despite a modest attendance this year the St George's Dinner evening was enjoyed by all.

Grace was given by the Ladies Captain (Clare Wilson). Master of Ceremonies, James Torr led proceedings with readings from Shakespeare ably assisted by Brian Roake. There were excellent amusing speeches from Captain (Colin Steele) and Jim Gregson. The LX Group proudly regained the Churchill Cup from the Ladies following an exciting match held on Wednesday 3rd March. Alan Rider, LX Caesar, took receipt of the cup from Clare Wilson, Ladies' Captain, during the lunch held after the match. Clare was generous in her congratulations to the LX who defeated the Ladies by 6 to 2 in a competition whose results did not really reflect how tight the games were.

The Churchill Cup competition is held each year in early March and brings together 8 pairings of Lady members and LX members, who played against each other this year in a Foursomes format. Following the match all 32 players enjoyed a wonderful 3 course meal together in the restaurant.

In the last 15 years the LX have now won 8 matches and the ladies have won 7. This win for the LX, however, is the first since 2007 so Caesar took the Cup back with some pride and relief!

GXGC Quiz Night 2010

Jim Kennedy  staged another successful Quiz Night at Gerrards Cross on Saturday 20th March, 18 teams took part this year. Part and parcel of quiz nights are the challenges contesting the accuracy of  the QM's answers. This year was no exception , a question under the "History" heading  asked the year of founding of our golf club. The QM's answer of "1923"  caused a spirited outburst from the floor. Jim rode the storm and obligingly  offered a point for the years either side of 1923. As ever a very enlightening and entertaining evening which was very well received by members and their guests.

Jim reports that the winning score represents about 78% of correct answers which he thinks is about right for assessing  the difficulty of questions.

LX Annual Lunch

LX Annual Lunch image

The LX Group held their Annual Lunch on Friday 26th February 2010. It was attended by a total of 84 people including our special guests of honour President, Mike Francis and his wife Jill, Captain, Colin Steele and his wife Alison, Ladies Captain, Clare Wilson, and her husband Graeme, Head Professional, Matthew Barr, Head Green-keeper, Lee Robinson and Assistant Secretary, Susie Lindsay. Many of the LX members brought their wives or partners and the 3 course meal lunch went wonderfully well with great food and atmosphere created by Carlos and his team.

Caesar, Alan Rider, gave an excellent and amusing 'after lunch' address following which he presented the trophy to the winner of the Winter Eclectic competition, John Daniel (received in his absence by John Watts) and a prize to the runner-up to Derek Wilson. Caesar then gave cheques, on behalf of the LX, to the value of £125.00 each to the Captain and the Ladies Captain to their selected charity - the Pepper Foundation. This foundation is a daughter organisation of the Ian Rennie Hospice that supports young children, and their families, enduring terminal illness.

Captain, Colin Steele, thanked Caesar on behalf of the Ladies Captain's and himself for the LX donation to the Pepper Foundation.

Everyone present enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the clubhouse and their lovely meal. Finally, Caesar presented all the ladies present with a colourful polyanthus plant to take home.

GXGC Wildlife Update

During the winter, the Buzzards have remained with us but we have not seen much of the Water Voles. It will soon be time to watch out and listen for the first summer visitors. The first to be heard (usually in mid-March) is the distinctive song of the Chiffchaff.  A few of these might have stayed in Britain through the winter but most fly in from southern Europe.

Next to arrive usually in April,  the Cuckoo and the Blackcap. The Cuckoo's call is easily recognised by all, but the song of the Blackcap can be confused with that of the Garden Warbler , they both tend to skulk in dense foliage and are not easily seen. The song is one of the most frequently heard sounds around the playing area from April to July . When I have actually made a positive visual identification they have been  Blackcaps, The only Garden Warbler spotted  was in the scrub area below the 17th tee, that was  many years ago. In March/April we should also be looking out for the first members of the Swallow family to arrive

Update - Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Charity Donation

As a token of appreciation, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has sent a framed photograph of Gus, the delightful little "hearing" dog for which the Ladies Section raised almost £6,000.Gus's new partner is Dee, a severely hearing impaired lady who communicates using Sign Supported English.

Dee leads a busy life, teaching Deaf Awareness and Signing. Gus travels with her on public transport and settles happily where Dee is teaching. He has increased her confidence. His "sound" work is good. He alerts Dee to the alarm clock, telephone, doorbell, smoke alarm and importantly for Dee, the call for attention from her elderly mother for whom she is the carer. Gus is a "Bolognese" and a wonderful personality.

Thank you, Gerrards Cross Golf Club ladies.

GXGC Wildlife Update

Member, Peter Sandford  is our resident expert on wildlife matters. About 12 years ago, Peter with  assistance from other members identified  74 bird species on or flying over the course and lake. Since that time, 12  other  species have been added  to the list  which now  totals 87. If Chalfont Park is included in the count the figure rises to 96. Some of these species were "occasionals" and have seldom, if ever, been spotted again. Peter will be delighted to hear from members who may have spotted other uncommon species during their travels round the golf course. Any new sightings would edge him closer to that elusive 100 species.

In near galeforce winds the Ladies representing Gerrards Cross, Lisa Allen and Barbara Roake had a hard fought win over the Harewood Downs duo, Susie Turner and Lucy Mann. This annual event between the Ladies of both golf clubs is now in its' eleventh year.

Both clubs have a preliminary competition on their own course and the two winners meet in a 4BBB matchplay final. In spite of the weather conditions some wonderful golf was played. Harewood Downs Ladies' Vice Captain, Maxine Evans, congratulated the winners and Gerrards Cross Ladies' Captain, Jackie McKnight, thanked Harewood Downs for their hospitality.

The competition attracted 66 entries from 23 golf clubs in the region, 33 were category 1 players (handicap of 5 or less) - A high quality field. The course was set up well by Lee and his green keeping staff, this made scoring difficult despite favourable weather for golf on the day.

Mitch McNulty (GX) proved to be the most consistent player shooting 71 both am and pm rounds by winning  both the Under 21 prize and also the Misbourne Salver which is presented for the best under 18 scratch score.

The contribution of the main sponsors of the event (Golf International, Smiths Nurseries, RBS, Bestoutcome (D Walton) and Linksclass London Ltd (P Ryan) was essential to the success of the competition. The Junior Section would like to thank these companies for their invaluable support. Contributions from within the club were made by the Ladies section, LX section and John Ramsbottom. This generosity enabled 25% of the field to walk away with a prize. The event continues to go from strength to strength and is quickly becoming a well established event in the B B & O golfing calendar.

Peter Hewitt, the Junior Organiser at Gerrards Cross managed the event with assistance from his regular team of  helpers. Peter would also like to thank Harry Fischer who was unable to play but volunteered to be a ball spotter. Susie Lindsay's  major contribution as always on these events was greatly appreciated by Peter and the Junior section.

Foxes win Ron Gibson Cup

The Ron Gibson Cup, played annually between Gerrards Cross Foxes and Ellesborough 'B' team, was recently won in dramatic style, for the first time since 2001,and only the fourth time since its inception in 1989.

The result is based upon the overall score over the home and away fixtures, played on consecutive Wednesdays towards the end of June. We were comprehensively defeated 5-1 on the difficult Ellesborough course, the sole point being secured through halved matches involving Jim Gillard and Bill George, and George Harrison and John Hadley.

In an unlikely turnaround in the home fixture, captained by Club Captain Graeme Wilson, the first 4 matches were won , the next halved, and all depended on the final match with the pairing of Adrian O'Connor and John Simcock, securing a memorable victory. The Cup was presented by Ron Gibson, himself, who was delighted with the result.

At the halfway stage in the season, the Foxes have 5 wins,3 losses and 3 halved matches.  A reminder to all who have played for the Foxes or in the Rabbits match against Moor Park-please note the date of the Foxes Finale on Monday September 21st,a team golf competition, with numerous prizes and a super dinner to follow.

Fine weather favoured  the Captain's Weekend golf activity on Sunday 5th July, this was  a  4 per- Team Alliance competition. Following  the "Picnic in the Park" revels the night before, Graeme Wilson chose a  generous format for this event .

2 scores to count on Par 4 and Par 5 holes
3 Scores to count on Par 3 holes

A Junior Team took advantage of this generous format by returning  a magnificent score of 105pts. Scores in other team categories were also  high.

As an addition to the normal sideshows of chipping and putting,  Graeme and Claire organised  "toy" duck races in the navigable part of the Misbourne by the 18th green. After duck floatation difficulties during trials the races went ahead. David Berry officiated as a trusty bookie. A prize giving supper brought this very successful  Captain's Weekend to a close.

Graeme Wilson  decided to make changes to the traditional Captain's Day event held in early July. He organised social and golfing activities on separate days and renamed the event "Captain's Weekend". In view of the poor weather we have experienced during the last two summers,  it was a high risk venture to suggest an outdoor concert and picnic as the major social event.

To everyone's delight his bold approach was rewarded,  the so called "Picnic In the Park" featuring The RAF Squadronaires orchestra was a resounding success. Excellent support from members and guests and a gloriously fine evening provided a truly memorable night at the  golf club.

The RAF Squadronaires played a wide range of music in fine  style to well over 300 members, guests and children. The audience were seated  in a "de luxe picnic" layout on the golf course side of the River Misbourne.

The RAF Squadronaires kindly agree to play at events on an expenses only basis providing  proceeds are donated to a military charity. In our case the Captain's charity "Help for Heroes". The sum raised by the event is expected to be around £2500 after staging costs and RAF expenses have been accounted for.

Sgt Lee Vivien (Trumpet) compered and  led the 17 piece orchestra, vocal numbers were provided by Jenny Howe. As a finale Graeme requested the return of Piper Rob Jordan. He  played here  with the RAF Salon Orchestra concert earlier in the year. As dusk approached  Rob paraded in front of the audience pipes-a-blazing to great acclaim.

Both British and U.S flags were flown to mark  Independence Day. Keith Lakin from Gerrards Cross Rotary Club supplied  an appropriate prop for the 4th of July, a WW2 jeep flying a Union Jack.

The Captain gave a vote of thanks to the RAF Squadronaires, he also thanked  the Social Committee for their support and determination to see this ambitious project through aided of course by superb weather on the night..

Captain's Weekend golfing activities will follow as a seperate news item .

BB&O v Essex

After torrential rain at Gerrards Cross on 7th June our match against Essex eventually got underway 1½ hours late. We got off to a great start in the morning taking a 3-1 lead in the foursomes. We looked to have things firmly under control early on in the singles but a spirited fightback by the Essex players saw the match go to the wire before we edged home 6½-5½ just as the heavens opened - once again. Our thanks to the host Club and Members for their enormous efforts to ensure the County match was given priority throughout the day. Click on the link below for the result sheet.

Shrub planting to the sides of the path approaching the new bridge completed the recent enhancements in the area surrounding the 1st tee.

The whole project was funded from the Gerrards Cross Golf Club Remembrance Fund. A large donation to the fund was made a while go by Ceridwyn Pritchard, a past Ladies' Captain and  the widow of a former Chairman, Tudor Pritchard.  Tudor was a leading force at the club in the 50s and 60s and was responsible for the acquisition of the land which led to the current layout of our delightful golf course.

The 1st Tee bridge project is now complete, the Chairman will inform Ceridwyn that her donation has been used to provide long lasting improvements to Gerrards Cross Golf Club.

Thanks go to members Fraser Kirkcaldy and Lindsay Barr for their valuable contributions to the design and construction engineering of the bridge. The competitors in the Captain v Vice Captain team match played earlier in the morning joined the two Captains for the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon.

The association of our Captain, Graeme Wilson with the Royal Air Force paid off handsomely as the RAF Salon Orchestra and Woodwind Ensemble visited GX to play for us in aid of the Captain's charity, Help for Heroes. Our  thanks must go to the musicians and their Director, Squadron Leader Duncan Stubbs, they gave up their Saturday evening and received no fee for the  performance(the ticket price covered their expenses). As a result the Club was in a position  to donate £1200 to the Captain's charity. More information about solo performances appears lower in the page.

The Scottish theme finale was intended to be a surprise for the Captain but that was not to be as the secret  was revealed. The finale featured an entrance by Piper, Chief  Technician Rob Jordan in full flow  accompanied by the orchestra, a grand climax to a memorable concert.

The ensemble received a well deserved standing ovation, a first for them by all accounts. Barry Stringer thanked the GX audience for its appreciation and attentiveness, according to Barry the latter is not always the case.

Another successful musical evening at the Club, 140 members and guests enjoyed the show and a glass of sparkling wine with friends during the interval. The Captain thanked the orchestra and explained that as service personnel they are called upon to carry out duties in war zones. Graeme also thanked those involved with the set up and the organisation of this special evening.

The heavy snow proved to be  very popular in some quarters as local schools closed and some parents were unable to get to work. After the GX Pro's Draw  over 160 members and guests squeezed into the Dining room and  Lounge for a Chicken Stroganoff with Rice supper.

At the request of co- producers Lyn Draper and Pat Messias the content of the Christmas social evening entertainment had been kept under wraps for some months. As the show drew nearer this was more difficult to conceal as evening rehearsals in the clubhouse started . Onlookers were sworn to secrecy.

All was revealed on the night when a glittering cast performed a GX home - grown version of the Royal Command Performance complete with "Royals". Our Captain and Ladies' Captain took on these illustrious roles of course!  Gerry Porter did a fine job as Master of Ceremonies, as always he is never lost for words!

Music and dance was the main theme with some comedy items added to the mix. Ian Holt triumphed with the well known Stanley Holloway piece "Albert and the Lion" using his best "northern" accent. Pam & Gilbert Runnicles were barely recognisable in their rather sad but beautifully performed duologue "GX Derby & Joan", they were accompanied by Phil Swift.

There were plenty of nerves jangling for all involved but  reward came later as the show was very well received by an appreciative GX audience. The evening ended with  general singing, upbeat Christmas songs replaced traditional carols  this year. The Twelve Days of Christmas by table was retained and much enjoyed by all.

The Captain  gave a warm vote of thanks to all involved in the production. Presentations were made to  co- producers Lyn Draper& Pat Messias - Don & Sylvia Crowland for editing the music tracks and  sound coverage on the night.

GXGC Professional's Christmas Draw 2008

The GXGC Christmas Social evening was launched with the Christmas Draw organised by the Club Professional, Matthew Barr and his staff.

William Boog-Scott won 3rd prize but as he had won 7th Prize a few minutes earlier he requested that the 3rd prize, a  Scotty Cameron putter should be redrawn, Tom Cliff was the lucky recipient.  More drama as the next winner for the 2nd prize, a  Ping 10 driver was the Captain, he also requested that this item should be redrawn . Chris Dunsdon, a junior member was the beneficiary this time, he received an early Christmas present courtesy of the Captain's generosity.

The Children's Christmas Party launches the  festive season events at Gerrards Cross. 60 children or grand-children with their minders enjoyed the fun. GXGC regular, Mr Marvel performed his wizardry before the refreshments, after the break he hosted an lively disco session to round off the entertainment.

Father Christmas had  heavy rain to deal with for his eagerly awaited arrival. The weather, course conditions and the construction work on the 1st Tee Bridge prevented  Santa from taking  his traditional ride across the course. The shortened  route allowed Father Christmas to stay reasonably dry and arrive with his sleigh lights still blazing.  Bravo Santa ! (alias Vice-Captain Colin Steele).

Santa's managers from the Social committee Pauline Upton and Sarah Roake kept an eagle eye on proceedings on the day. Many thanks to them  for their efforts behind the scenes.

Ladies Bacon Stakes

Ladies Bacon Stakes image
Ladies Bacon Stakes image

On Tuesday the 9th December, 82 ladies took part in this annual cross country golf event. The weather and conditions were good, and it was an interesting course. The Lady Captain, Jackie, thought the course might have been too easy as several birdies and an eagle were scored! However, the participants thought the temporary greens made the course more challenging, and the good scoring reflected the high standard of the golf!

After play the ladies enjoyed a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine. The pictures show the eventual winners (Carol Grant and Liz Grieve) planning their strategy. The other picture shows Patricia Murphy and Maggie Pike enjoying a glass of mulled wine with Simon Lawton, a member of the bar staff.

The first of the "Away Days"  planned by Captain, Graeme Wilson was held at Ashridge Golf club on 18th November  2008.  23 hardy souls drove off the first tee in drizzly conditions but thankfully the weather improved after four holes.  For the remainder of the round this beautiful golf course was  guilded in autumn sunshine -  a perfect day. The course was wet but played well off the white tees. The Captain chose Stableford format for the competition and was up to the job by pipping Gilbert Runnicles on count back  to win first prize with 39 points. As ever the Ashridge hospitality and lunch were superb. Graeme intends to organise similar outings during his Captain's year so keep an eye on  the notice board. Players of all standards will be welcome.

Heavy overnight rain gave way to dry weather for the traditional drive-in ceremony for the incoming Captain, Graeme Wilson. Bucks Fizz & sausage rolls were on offer, John Watts organised his Captain's drive distance lottery as in previous years. Graeme was up to the challenge and drove 200yards with his first ball. The second drive which started the match between Captain /Pro & Past Captain /Vice-Captain was longer, an impressive start to Graeme's golfing year as Captain.

Club Professional, Mathew Barr officiated at the 1st tee with a good turnout of members and guests. Former Captain ,Gilbert Runnicles selected  200 yards to win the traditional bottle of whisky. This was rapidly consumed by members during the unveiling ceremony of the Captain's caricature in the Men's Bar later. The caricature as you would expect had a military theme reflecting Graeme's career serving as an officer in the Medical branch of the Royal Air Force.

Gerrards Cross member, Derek Huddleston has been the organising force behind fundraising events in aid of the Jessica Taylor Charity Fund. Jessica is Derek's 14 year old grand-daughter, who had surgery last August to partially remove a medullobalstoma brain tumour, this was followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. Jessica's family are now raising money to  take her hopefully to America for further treatment which is not currently available in the UK.

20 teams of four took part in the event which was interrupted by a couple of heavy showers but all teams managed to complete their rounds in good spirits. The generous format of 2 best scores from 4 to count on each hole ensured that some decent cards were returned.  "Merley Paper Converters" were the winning team with a score of 90pts.

Many local companies and individuals sponsored each hole and various prizes were awarded for nearest the pin, longest drive, and a challenge hole.

Brian Roake was Master of Ceremonies for the evening  with able assistance from BBC Radio DJ Tim Smith as auctioneer. Many sporting memorabilia items, golf courtesies and hotel accommodation were put to the gavel in aid of the charity, other companies also donated raffle prizes. The whole day including pledges raised in excess £10,000 for the Jessica Taylor Charity Fund, a marvellous return for the effort put in by the organisers. If anyone wishes to make a donation to the charity please contact Derek Huddleston by email at: dahuddl1@btconnect.com

GX member Geoff Betts with his guitar provided the after supper cabaret with a song written specifically for Jessica. You can listen to this song by logging onto www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx5lWf_s5Vs  and donations can be made via logging onto www.justgiving.com/jessicataylormediarooms2

Derek expressed his thanks to everyone behind the scenes at Gerrards Cross and also the contributors for making the day so successful. He also thanked the Captain for his support . Jessica and  other members of the family had a wonderful day , the fun, laughter, generosity and support from everyone at  Gerrards Cross will be fondly remembered.

A very rare event occurred at Gerrards Cross Golf Club during the Hospital Cup competition on Saturday 23rd August.  The Ladies' Captain , Jane Kirkcaldy and Pam Bird were playing in the same threeball group . At the 5th hole , Pam Bird was delighted to find her ball in the hole when she arrived at the green. Congatulations all round from the spectators on  the 6th tee and Jane Kirkcaldy who had already scored an Ace  at the 16th hole on Captain's Day 2008. However the story was far from over, the group progressed to the 16th hole where Jane, not to be outdone, repeated her feat on Captain's Day by also scoring an ace. The clubhouse festivities were shared on this occasion which is probably a first for GXGC.

Their generosity was repeated at  the Prize giving ceremony after the Bank Holiday Scramble where all present were offered a complimentary drink to re-celebrate their special achievement.

Gerrards Cross Golf Club staged its first Men's Seniors Open on Friday 15th August. The event attracted players from distant parts together with good support from the host club. Unlike some other Seniors events in the area this competition was an 18 hole Medal event with prizes in Scratch and Handicap categories.

In the Handicap competition prizes were awarded in four Seniors age groups. Details of prize winners in all categories can be downloaded by clicking on the link at the bottom of this news item.

The winner of the Scratch prize was Glyn Rees from Fleetwood GC with a score of 74 gross, a victory on count back from Gilbert Runnicles, immediate Past Captain of Gerrards Cross. Third place went to Sean Lynch  from Minchinhampstead GC also on count back with 74 gross.

Visiting golfers were very complimentary about the excellent condition of the golf course. All participants thoroughly enjoyed their day and were well looked after by Denis and his kitchen staff. The inaugural Gerrards Cross Seniors Open was a great success.

On Tuesday, 8th July Jane Kirkcaldy, the Ladies' Captain of Gerrards Cross Golf Club hosted Ladies' Captain's Day 2008.  92 ladies participated enjoying warm sunshine with lengthy torrential showers on occasions. The day was particularly special for Jane as she was still celebrating her first  Hole-in-One achieved  three days earlier on the Club Captain's Day. To top it all she was also celebrating a very significant birthday.

Tuesday produced its own excitement with another Hole-in-One by Gillian Kinnear on the 13th hole as Jane did on Saturday she secured the "Nearest the Pin" prize (Silver Division). The ace was a real bonus as she went on to win the Silver Division prize.  Sarah Roake continued her good form by winning the  Ladies' Captain's prize with 41pts. The Silver Division prize was won by Gillian Kinnear closely followed by her flatmate Lisa Allen with 40pts, The Bronze Division prize went to Marilyn Evans with 35 points.

After a refreshing Pimms on the terrace the day continued with a putting competition on a specially designed six-hole course, each hole was named after its designated antique putter. Putting seems to have nothing to do with the putter or its age as there were many Holes-in-One  - Annie Donaldson took that prize.

Following a delicious tea and the presentation of prizes Jane herself was presented with an engraved rose bowl from the Ladies section to thank her for a lovely day. A lasting memento for her double celebration.

Brian Bedingfeld  put a great deal of effort into the planning of his Captain's Day with assistance from Simon, Susie and the Social committee. He chose a Team Alliance format for the main competition which was the fully subscribed. Brian being  a very fair-minded man offered Team Alliance prizes in  three categories: Gentleman (including Juniors) Ladies and Mixed.

The proceeds of the Team Alliance, Hit Monty chipping and putting competitions were donated to the British Heart Fondation.  Matthew Barr set out a difficult putting course this year which was reflected in high scores.

The Ladies Captain made her unique contribution to the day by getting a Hole in One at the 16th to be sure of winning the Ladies "Nearest the Pin" prize. Some may say it was an inopportune time for such a feat with 164 members and guests in the clubhouse for the evening celebrations. Jane was not phased by the prospect she generously placed a bottle of wine on each table.

A Hog Roast & Salads supper with a Tropical Fruit dessert was followed by musical entertainment in Latin style provided by the talented Sol Chango group. A Salsa Dance Party duo gave a demonstration of Salsa dancing with tuition for those members and guests willing to give it a go. This teaching produced mixed results but a good time was had by all.

The Captain awarded prizes for the Best Dressed pair in Salsa syle, The winners were Carol Berry and George Harrison, George in the view of all was the clear winner by a country mile.

Golf news items are few and far between at this time of year but social events at the club continue to provide interesting column space.

Molls & Mobsters were out in force in the dining room attending the Murder Mystery Dinner on Saturday 23rd February.

The renamed Red Lantern Theatre group returned to stage a Chicago 1920s gangster drama set in the Little Venice Italian restaurant. The action of the piece was interleaved with a 3 course meal. Much consultation ensued as each table was tasked to identify  the murderer from a succession of clues and red herrings provided by the cast of five.Gary, an undercover agent in their midst was the murderer.(extreme right on photo)

A table team appropriately named "Spaghetti Junction " took the prize. The Captains and the cast were delighted to see that most people had entered the spirit of the evening by dressing in the style of the period. Prizes for the best costumes went to Ann Munro for her stunning flappers outfit and Adrian, a member's guest for his authentic  "Scarface" makeup and gangster attire.

Following the success of the organ recital held at the club last year, Iain Ledingham returned with a company of four graduate singers from the Royal Academy of Music. Iain provided the accompaniment for the protégés on piano. The dining room was set out in theatre style to accommodate a large turn-out of 130 members and guests.

 PERFORMERS

Clare Watkins         Soprano
Emma Carrington    Mezzo Soprano
Lei Shao                 Tenor
Tom Lowe               Baritone
Iain Ledingham       Piano

A selection of well -known operatic pieces were sung as solos. Claire, Emma and Tom joined forces for the encore, an extract from Cosi fan tutti. Ian Ledingham performed two piano solos one in each half of the programme.

Pam Clark, her daughter and son-in-law were honarary guests for the evening. Pam donated the piano to the club in memory of her late husband Jim, a former Captain of Gerrards Cross Golf Club.

Wine and canapies were served during an extended interval in true theatre style. The company received a well deserved ovation for their outstanding performances  from a very appreciative audience. The Captain expressed his thanks to Iain and the company for making yet another classical musical event at the club such a resounding success.
